Why Most Tradesperson Websites Lose Jobs (And How to Fix Yours)

Sector GuidesBloomorbit Studio9 Aug 2026

We've audited a lot of tradesperson websites in the UK — plumbers, electricians, builders, joiners, roofers, gas engineers. The same five problems show up on most of them. None are expensive to fix, all are costing real money in lost jobs.

Problem 1: Your phone number isn't the first thing people see

The number-one thing a customer in plumbing emergency mode wants is your phone number, right now, big enough to tap. On too many tradesperson websites it's buried in the navigation, sub-12px, on a "contact" page two clicks deep.

Fix:

  • Phone number in the header -- click-to-call enabled, prominent on mobile.
  • Tap-target large enough -- that a wet hand under a sink can hit it.

Look at our tradespeople sector page for the kind of layout that converts.

Problem 2: No service area

The second thing customers want to know is "do you cover my postcode?" If your site doesn't answer this in the first ten seconds, the visitor bounces and tries the next result.

Fix:

  • Clear service area on the homepage -- either a map, a list of towns/postcodes, or a postcode-checker.
  • Don't be vague -- "we cover South Wales" is less useful than "Cardiff, Newport, Penarth, Barry, the Vale of Glamorgan and within 30 miles of CF11".

Problem 3: No service breakdown

Buyers want to know whether you do the specific thing they need. "Plumber" is too vague. They want to know:

  • Boiler servicing
  • Emergency leaks
  • Bathroom installations
  • Underfloor heating
  • Gas Safe-registered services
  • New-build first fix vs domestic repair

If your services aren't enumerated, customers assume you don't do their specific job and call someone else. Even if you do.

Problem 4: No social proof at decision time

Reviews matter, but Google Reviews on their own aren't enough — they're easy to fake and customers know it. The signals that actually convert:

  • Photos of completed jobs (before/after)
  • Specific named customers with quotes (with permission)
  • Trade body memberships (Gas Safe, NICEIC, FMB, Trustmark) with registration numbers
  • A real face — yours, and your crew's

Generic stock photos of pipes and tools are a negative signal. They suggest you don't have your own work to show.

Problem 5: No clear next step

A surprising number of tradesperson websites end every page with… nothing. No CTA, no enquiry form, no "what to do now" suggestion. The customer is then expected to scroll back to the top to find the phone number.

Fix:

  • Every page ends with a clear next step -- for most trades, that's a phone number plus a free quote / audit form.
  • Don't make customers think.

What a fixed tradesperson website looks like

Five-second scan should tell a visitor: who you are, what trades you cover, what area you serve, how to call you.

Ten-second scan should establish credibility (qualifications, reviews, work photos).

Thirty-second scan should give them everything they need to make a decision.

Most of the websites we rebuild for tradespeople go from converting at ~1% to ~5% just by getting these five basics right. The volume of inbound calls roughly triples without any change in traffic.

Cost and timeline

A purpose-built tradesperson website with the above is in our £799 starter package or £1,999 professional tier depending on how many services you offer and whether you need integration with a booking system. Typically 5-10 working days from go.

Common mistakes when refreshing your site

  • Over-designing it. Trades buyers want clear, not clever. Stop adding effects.
  • Skipping mobile. 80%+ of plumbing and emergency-trade traffic is on mobile. The mobile experience is the primary experience.
  • Adding a chatbot before fixing the basics. A chatbot on a site that doesn't show your phone number won't fix the conversion problem.
