Cardiff has more web design agencies than you'd expect for a city of 470,000. Some are excellent, some are middle-of-the-road, and some will burn 12 months of your time. Here's how a Cardiff small business should pick.
What to check first
- Real, recent local work -- Ask to see three Cardiff-area client websites the agency has built in the last 18 months. If they can't produce them, walk away. "Sample work" pulled from international clients tells you nothing about how they'll handle a Penarth solicitor or a Cathays accountant.
- Genuine knowledge of UK and Welsh small business context -- UK GDPR, Companies House requirements, Welsh language considerations where relevant, sector regulators (FCA, SRA, ICAEW, NICEIC, Gas Safe). If the agency doesn't know what these are, they're going to ship you something that misses the obvious.
- Clear pricing on their site -- Cardiff agencies who hide pricing usually do so because their pricing changes based on what they think they can charge you. Ours is on the pricing page.
Pricing signals
Realistic Cardiff pricing in 2026:
- £600-£1,000: starter websites, small studios or experienced freelancers
- £1,500-£4,000: professional websites, established agencies
- £4,000-£12,000: bespoke websites with custom design or integrations
- £3,500+: client portals
- £8,000+: full ecommerce or complex platforms
If someone quotes you £300 for a "professional business website" they're either using a template with no customisation, or building so quickly that quality will suffer. If someone quotes you £8,000 for a 5-page brochure site, you're being overcharged.
Questions to ask
Five questions that filter the field quickly:
- Can I edit the content myself after launch? The answer should be yes, in a CMS you can use, with brief training included. "Email us when you want changes" is a red flag.
- What's included in your post-launch support? A reasonable answer covers bugfixes for 3 months, minor content tweaks, and monitoring uptime. Beyond that should be priced clearly.
- What stack do you use and why? Listen for whether they're tracking modern tooling or stuck on a 2018 WordPress habit. Both can work, but the reasoning matters.
- What's your typical timeline? 5-10 working days for a starter site is realistic. "8-12 weeks" means they're swamped, juniors are doing the work, or they're padding.
- Show me a site you built that didn't work out. Trick question — agencies who refuse to admit any project ever went sideways are either lying or haven't built enough sites.
Cardiff-specific things to think about
- Local SEO targeting Cardiff, Newport, Penarth, Caerphilly, the Valleys, Vale of Glamorgan
- Welsh language elements where appropriate (bilingual signage, Welsh-medium audiences in certain sectors)
- Public-sector and Welsh Government tender visibility if you sell to them
- South Wales business culture — direct, relationship-driven, allergic to flannel
A good Cardiff agency won't try to sell you San Francisco-style "growth hacking" speak. They'll talk like a normal South Wales person.
