Your Website vs Your Competitors': How to Audit Where You're Losing Business Online

Business GrowthBloomorbit Studio6 Jul 2026

Most UK small businesses know their direct competitors but have never systematically compared their website against them. That's where business is being lost — visibly, measurably, and fixably.

The five-point comparison

For your three closest competitors, score each on:

1. Search visibility. Do you appear in the top 5 organic results for your most important commercial keywords? If competitors rank above you for "[your service] [your town]", that's lost traffic.

2. Above-the-fold clarity. On mobile, can a non-employee tell what each business does in 10 seconds? If competitors are clearer, they convert better.

3. Trust signal density. Count the trust signals (named team, real client work, credentials, reviews with names) visible on each homepage. Score 1-10. Higher score wins.

4. Pricing transparency. Does each competitor show prices, ranges, or hide them entirely? Hidden pricing is a conversion drag — competitors who publish typically convert more.

5. Primary CTA strength. What's the main next step on each competitor's site? Specific (book a 10-minute call) or vague (contact us)? Specific wins.

What to do with the scores

You'll find specific gaps. Examples we see often:

  • A competitor publishes prices and you don't → publish yours
  • A competitor has named team bios and you have anonymous "our team" → add bios
  • A competitor's mobile site loads in 1.5 seconds and yours in 5 → fix performance
  • A competitor ranks for "[service] [town]" and you don't → fix that page's SEO

Each gap is fixable. Most aren't expensive.

Sector-specific notes

Trades: phone number prominence, service area clarity, trade body credentials. If a competitor has all three above the fold and you don't, you're losing emergency-mode calls.

Accountants: sector specialism, MTD-aware copy, pricing transparency. The firms publishing real numbers are eating the lunch of the ones hiding behind "every situation is different".

Healthcare: CQC visibility, practitioner profiles, treatment pricing where applicable.

Solicitors: practice area depth, SRA registration, fees structure.

What you should NOT do

  • Copy competitors' design (it's their brand, not yours)
  • Compete on price alone
  • Add their feature list to yours without thinking about whether it fits your buyer
